When a tree is cut down and converted into logs, the carbon dioxide given off when those logs burn is only that which it has locked up during the course of it's lifetime. This CO2 would be released anyway when the tree died and decomposed naturally. The regrowth from the stump of that cut down tree, or a newly planted one, immediately starts soaking up CO2 as it grows, and so the cycle starts again. Fossil fuels on the other hand are giving off CO2 that has been locked up under the earth for tens of thousands of years, and would not otherwise be released.
